Knives Out is a 2019 American black comedy–thriller film written, produced and directed by Rian Johnson. Described as a modern take on the murder mystery genre, the film follows a family gathering gone horribly awry, after the family patriarch’s death leads a master detective to investigate. Knives Out brings a fresh seasoning in the investigative niche, re-creating the scene entirely.
The story borders around a detective and a trooper who travel to a lush estate to interview the quirky relatives while investigating the murder of a patriarch who died during his 85th birthday celebration.
Rain Johnson decided to go all out with the cast, employing super expert taste, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer. The plot explicitly brings intrigue to life as Rain takes his audience back to perfect cinematography.
Unlike some of his work in the past, Knives Out has gained thorns of good reviews from the toughest critics. Rotten Tomatoes “Knives Out sharpens old murder-mystery tropes with a keenly assembled suspense outing that makes brilliant use of writer-director Rian Johnson’s stellar ensemble.” Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 84 out of 100 based on 22 critics, indicating “universal acclaim”.
